Practical Animal Care

If you care about the welfare of animals you may have thought about volunteering to help your local RSPCA.  Here we answer some of the questions you may have about how you can help.

QUESTION :    Have I got what it takes to be a volunteer for the RSPCA?

The RSPCA is the world’s leading animal welfare organisation.  Volunteers, from home visitors to members of the national Society’s ruling Council, are its backbone.

Whatever your background, the RSPCA would like to hear from you.  You can contribute as much or as little time as you wish.

You may be able to support the RSPCA even if you do not know much about animal care – many people help out at special fundraising events, carry out administrative work or collect donations from the public.

QUESTION :     ARE THERE ANY BENEFITS FOR ME?

The RSPCA needs its volunteers to play an effective part in its organisation, but you will not be thrown in at the deep end.  When you become a volunteer you will have a general induction course followed by active support and specialist training for the work you are going to do.

As a volunteer for the RSPCA you could gain important transferable skills in fundraising, campaigning, finance, teambuilding or management – all of which could benefit you in your working life.

Our volunteers also gain from the social life associated with their work for the RSPCA – What better way to meet like-minded people with a variety of skills and ideas to contribute?

QUESTION :    COULD I HELP  IF I DO NOT HAVE MUCH SPARE TIME?

You can give as much or as little time as you like.  Lots of volunteers help out only once a year at special events, while others help the Society on a weekly or even daily basis.  Some people have no time at all to give but still support us by providing storage space for collection boxes or literature.  Whatever you can offer, contact your local branch to see how you can help.

HOW YOU COULD HELP THE  RSPCA

HOME  VISITING :

Home visitors talk to potential animal adopters in their own homes, making sure they have really thought about the implications of owning a pet.  They report back to the Branch on the suitability of the home.

FUNDRAISING :

All the money branches need is raised locally.

Fundraising is not just about flag days and raffles – volunteers are inspired by hobbies and

interests to come up with all sorts of profitable schemes.

COMMITTEE  WORK :

The Society relies on a network of volunteers to support its campaigns locally.

Everyone has a skill to contribute, whether it is writing newsletters, campaigning or general organisational skills.

Its also a great way to develop your skills, and the training programmes are excellent.

PRACTICAL ANIMAL CARE :

The opportunities to work with animals vary from area to area.  Where there is an animal centre volunteers may be encouraged to help with dog walking and the day-to-day care of animals
